Where are you originally from?

Born in Little Rock, lived near West Memphis in elementary school, then middle school and high school in Lubbock, TX

How long have you lived in the Nashville area?

31 years

How did you discover Ethos? What drew you here?

I met Logan Hartline (Marathon Campus) in 2010 when we sat by each other during a jury selection process in Lebanon. I got booted off the jury, but we were able to visit for about an hour. We had some things in common, including faith in Jesus, and we stayed in touch afterwards. He and I also started working on projects together. Meanwhile my wife and I began to feel a desire to find a new church home. This was not a casual decision as we had been at our church for 25 years and we had deep relationships with many family members there.

One thing we said early on as we talked this over was that we would not drive into Nashville. So the first place we went was to a community church near our house, but over three months we weren't feeling like it was where God wanted us.

I knew that Logan was part of Ethos, and I asked him some questions about it and found out that Josh and Molly Willis were leading the student program and they had a middle school program — which is unusual, at least in our experience. All three of our kids were in middle school, so we decided to visit one Sunday in August. Logan met us over at the Cannery and connected us with Josh and also introduced us to Dave.

During the worship, the Spirit was palpable and I sensed something I'd never felt during worship before. We kept coming back every Sunday and suddenly found we were home. What we found on that Sunday and since were people who are on fire for Jesus and committed to the Word — people who are eager to listen to the Spirit and to connect deeply with each other.

What is your hope for our church family?

I hope people can continue to be honest with each other and will keep pushing each other lovingly towards a deeper relationship with Jesus. I pray that the power of the Spirit will become more and more evident in the holy ways we live our lives and that lost people will be drawn to want to know who this Jesus is.

Where did you go to college?

Harding University

How did you meet your spouse?

We met at Harding University. We don't remember the exact moment when we met — our friend circles overlapped. She asked me out first (a tradition called Sadie Hawkins Day at Harding). Then a few months later, I asked her out again (I'm not sure what took me so long but thankfully she was still available!)

How long have you been married?

32 years

Do you have any pets?

Great Pyrenees named Libby; three cats named Cloudie, Merry, and Pippin; 9 chickens

Hobbies:

I roast coffee and make my own espresso. I also like to mountain bike. And I try to read weighty books — or at least they're weighty to me.

Favorite Foods/Drinks:

For my espresso, I have three commercial grinders so I can make Lisa's coffee with a washed process bean, mine with natural process (such as most Ethiopian coffees), and one for decaf. I also like cooking things on the iron skillet. And Lisa likes to cook healthy things without a lot of canned or boxed things.

Favorite Travel Destinations:

New York City, Charleston

Favorite Movies:

It's a Wonderful Life, Shop Around the Corner, Stalag 17, The Tree of Life, Monsters Inc.

Favorite Books:

Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov and The Idiot, Wendell Berry's Jayber Crow, C.S. Lewis' The Great Divorce, Chesterton's The Man Who Was Thursday, the Bibliotheca version of the Bible

Favorite Music:

Young Oceans, United Pursuit, John Mark McMillan

Passions:

I like talking coffee (do you know when the coffee you're drinking was roasted?). I'm also pretty talkative about a few subjects like architecture, locally made and sourced things, authentic multi-use developments, pre-modern art and literature, how you came to know and love Jesus...

Anything else you'd like to add?

Lisa and I really like visiting with people. We've not had TV for most of our married life, and I don't read the news (except for one magazine on culture), so I'm not current on sports or politics. But I love to get to know people, especially having them out to our house to sit on the porch and talk.

What do you do day to day?

I homeschool our three children, and I teach high school math at their tutorial.

Where are you originally from?

Newport, Ohio

How long have you lived in the Nashville area?

How did you discover Ethos? What drew you here?

We knew of several dear friends who attend Ethos. The Lord put on our hearts that He was leading our family somewhere. We spent the summer of 2015 praying and listening. We visited Ethos in August of that year and had multiple confirmations that Ethos is where the Lord wants our family.

What is your hope for our church family?

My prayer is what Jesus prayed for us in John 17. That we may all be one with our Father, just as "You are in me, and I am in You". When we are abiding in the Father, and He is abiding in us, then we will be united together in Him and the world will know the love of God and gift of His Son. (John 17: 20-26)

Where did you go to college?

Harding University

Hobbies:

Bike riding with my family. Hiking/walking our trail. Reading. Doxasoma (a christian yoga program that I am just now getting back in to after too long of an absence.) Coffee time on one of our porches with a loved one, especially my sweet husband.

Favorite Food/Drinks:

I reap the benefits of my husband's love of coffee. He fixes me an Americano every morning. I enjoy Greek food and Cuban food.

My kids have introduced me to everything from Sleeping at Last to The Gray Havens, but my very favorite is listening to Jack play the piano or Maggie while she is singing (all throughout the day) and her piano as well.

Passions:

Discipleship for women and encouraging women

Anything else you'd like to add?

I love spending time with people and sharing life together (we live in the country, so it's fun to share country life with others) — encouraging each other to slow down and try to keep some margin in our lives.
