Local Missions: August Monthly Missions Focus

Posted by Jana Ogg on

As we dive deeper into what it means to live missionally as a church family, we believe it’s important to live it out both far and near: both in places and countries all across the globe, and right in our own backyard.  Acts 1:8 lays this concept out by saying, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere- in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

It’s an unfortunate reality in our American culture that the “far” is often praised and uplifted above the “near." It can sometime seem like a bigger calling to go to Africa than to minister to your neighbors. But in the Kingdom of God there is NO distinction between callings, and one is not more important than the other.

As Christians, our main job description is to “go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19), both here in our own backyard and thousands of miles away.

At Ethos, we desire to champion local missions as much as we do global missions. The reality is many of you will never serve overseas. However, our prayer is that every single one of us will live into the mission God has given us here in Nashville.

Unsure of where to start in living missionally in our city? There are over 2,000 nonprofit organizations in the metro Nashville area alone! The majority of those organizations need volunteers, and are an amazing place to get a foot in the door in showing Nashville the love of Jesus.

However, there are so many more ways that you can live on mission in our city!

Here are a few more ways you can live on mission locally:

  • Loving your neighbor
  • Praying for the checkout lady at the grocery store
  • Sharing your faith at the gym
  • Playing in sports league and circling everyone up to pray after the game
  • Joining a trivia team and being intentional with other players/teams

The list doesn't stop there - the possibilities are endless as you live on mission in your city! Our prayer is for missions at Ethos to become a lifestyle for our church family, not a box we check once or twice a year.

Can you imagine what would happen if every single one of us began to live like Jesus in the places we go every day?

Ethos is different than many traditional American churches in that our heart is to serve as the bridge between our church family with a heart to serve and organizations connected to our church that need help. We have some absolutely amazing people in our church family serving our city in spectacular ways- with everything from starting ministries in the neighborhoods they live in to homeless ministry to healthcare for refugees and everything in between!  If you want to see a list of a few of the ministries we are partnered with, click here

It starts with you and I understanding that we are God’s hands and feet in helping people come to know Jesus, that we get the joy of helping people step into life with God.

YOU ARE A MISSIONARY. It’s NOT just the jobs of a select few who move across the world. God doesn’t whisk us off to heaven as soon as we accept him because we still have a purpose. As a Christian, our singular purpose is to reach the lost. That’s it; that’s our job. It's the Great Commission! It’s our only orders. You are men and women of God in the city. Ethos isn’t a place. We, the people, are the church.

Ethos, we really believe the Holy Spirit of God is dwelling inside you as Christians. He has equipped you with everything you need to change eternities - step into that and own the fact that you are a missionary!

Go, Ethos, and make disciples!
